Company Origin
Sterling Serpents was founded in Amherst New York in early 2012 – inspired by the hatching of a beautiful “Sterling Bee Ball Python”, hence the company name.
At that time, the primary focus of the company was to produce the highest quality Ball Python and Western Hognose Morphs (by health and appearance).
Growth and Restructuring
Sterling Serpents began vending at local reptile shows in Buffalo NY, Pittsburg PA, Cleveland and Columbus OH, and White Plains NY, consistently growing between 2012 and 2015, with a peak of upwards of 300 animals in our collection.
During this expansion period, Sterling Serpents began working with additional species, including New Caledonian Giant Geckos (R. leachianus) – producing our first hatchlings in 2013, changing the course of the business to focus less on snakes and more on geckos!
In 2015, Sterling Serpents underwent a major restructuring – Systematically reducing breeding population (selling much of our breeding stock to other local breeders), and moving from Western NY to Central North Carolina.
Much of this change was due to changing market conditions surrounding reptile-amphibian breeding – with shows becoming dominated with only a few different species (ball pythons, bearded dragons, leopard geckos), and general over-breeding of many of the species we have historically worked with. Between 2015 and 2020 we continually invested in our infrastructure – upgrading old rack systems to larger visual displays, building and installing custom bioactive terrariums, and focusing on expanding diverse and unique breeding projects to replace much of the ball python breeding that founded the company.
Modern Day
In 2021, we returned to the reptile community, with improved facilities and a new direction – Keeping and breeding uncommon gecko species and genetic variants!
We can’t wait to see what the future holds!
